IRS Tax Filing Deadline Moving to July 15th, File Refund Returns ASAP

Earlier this week it was announced the IRS tax payment deadline will move from April 15 to July 15, 2020, but the tax filing deadline remained April 15th, 2020. Today’s tweet; that’s changing.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced in a Twitter post today, Friday, March 20, 2020, the IRS tax filing deadline is being moved from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020 at the direction of the President. The tweet was posted at @stevenmnuchin1 and reads, “At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.”

As reported by Alistair M. Nevius, J.D. today in Journal of Accountancy, Barry Melancon, AICPA president and CEO, thanked Secretary Mnuchin for listening to taxpayers and the accounting profession…, and, in another portion of Melancon’s statement added, “There is a great need to support the U.S. economy, and it is urgently critical that refund returns are filed as soon as possible, without unnecessary delay and when able and safe to do. Our profession has a tremendous opportunity to create economic stimulus when we help taxpayers submit a refund return.”

Per IRS the average refund is $2700.
