Keys to Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave

Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program is a new statewide insurance program that pays benefits when employees take time off work to care for themselves or family members. As an employer in Washington State, your organization likely has new premium collection, reporting and benefit responsibilities. Beginning January 1, 2020 Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave allows employees to take paid leave when they have a qualifying event like welcoming a new child, experiencing their own serious injury or illness or taking care of a seriously ill or injured relative. Leave may also be taken related to a family member’s military deployment, including childcare. Benefits include job protection for eligible employees, health insurance continuation and protection against discrimination and retaliation.
